How new tech from software startup can keep workers safe

Worldwide, more than 1,000 people die every day in workplace accidents, which is why it's so important to assess and prevent as many risks in the workplace as possible. Employers and safety managers in Missouri now have new technology they can depend on for this purpose. Based in Des Moines and specializing in SaaS, MākuSafe is a startup that has developed wearable bands capable of recording environmental and motion data.

If employees wear this band during the workday, it can record changes in lighting and temperature, changes in radiation levels if applicable and even near-misses and hazardous situations. All of this data is automatically stored in a cloud platform where safety managers can use it to determine what preventative measures should be taken. They could, for example, set up emergency equipment and supplies in areas with a high safety risk.

MākuSafe technology not only makes the data consumable for managers but also identifies high-impact trends and hazardous areas in the workplace. The benefits of implementing this technology include lower worker injury rates, less downtime after an accident and a more streamlined review process for workers compensation claims. The software can also serve as a collaborative tool between businesses and insurers with the latter being able to deploy risk control strategies based on claims.

When workers incur an injury, they may file for benefits through the workers compensation program and be reimbursed for medical expenses and a percentage of their lost income. The benefits might also include short- or long-term disability leave. Dependents of workers who die in an accident may be able to receive death benefits. In either case, it's a good idea to retain legal representation before filing. A lawyer may help show that the accident was work-related and assist with the appeal if the claim is denied.
